QUEPEM: If it was not for Dharmendra Naik, a valiant fire fighter from the Curchorem Fire Services, Sunil Chavan, aged 30 would have met with a watery grave in the Khusawati river.
Chavan was being washed away with the flood waters and was battling for his life clinging to a branch of a tree right in the middle of the river.
It was at this time that the Fire Services Department here received a call stating that a man was drowning in the river. The rescue team on receiving information rushed to the spot and Dharmendra risking his life and limb ventured into the turbulent waters, tied a rope around the drowning man and managed to drag him to safety, drawing accolades from onlookers. He was later taken to the health centre at Quepem and administered first aid.
