First-time panch Nisha Chari elected Sarpanch of Loliem-Polem panchayat

MARGAO: Nisha Suraj Chari was elected unopposed as the new Sarpanch of Loliem-Polem village panchayat. Hailing from Idhar (ward no 1), Chari , a first-time panch, gained support from eight out of nine members during the election held recently.

The special meeting, presided over by the Canacona Block Development Officer (BDO) Extension Officer Biva Velip and attended by panchayat Secretary Sandeep Dessai, witnessed the absence of only one panch member, the outgoing Sarpanch Pratiza Bandekar. With Chari being the sole nominee for the vacant Sarpanch post, Biva Velip, the presiding officer, officially declared her elected unopposed, following the due election process. Notably, last month, Bandekar resigned citing personal reasons amid alleged pressure regarding a Film-City proposal for Bhagwati Plateau. The significance of Chari’s appointment as the Sarpanch, given the reserved status for women, is highlighted amidst claims that the panchayat may be leaning towards development on the eco-sensitive Bhagwati Plateau, contrary to the gram sabha resolution advocating preservation for future generations.

It may be recalled that the a large number of residents from Loliem had recently  written to various authorities such as the Governor of Goa, Chief Secretary, Administrator of Comunidades South Zone, South Goa Additional Director of Panchayats, Loliem Sarpanch & Secretary, voicing their opposition to the Film City Project.
