PANJIM: Consumers visiting fish markets have been left disappointed with the scarce fish available and its quality as well.

It is pertinent to note that the dispute between the wholesale fish market traders and the contractor of the wholesale fish market has also affected the quantity of fish available in the retail market. For four days last week, vehicles transporting fish were not allowed to enter the wholesale fish market, which compounded the issue and nearby retail markets suffered as well. Not just in the South, the situation regarding dearth of fish was seen in markets across the State.
For instance, a visit to the Panjim municipal fish market last week saw local vendors complaining about the lack of fish supply in the last couple of days.
Consumers complained of the fish quality of whatever was available and added that the vendors were trying to sell the same at a low price to dispose the old stock.
On Monday, when Herald visited the market again, there was still less quantity of fish available although the prices increased. The price of Kingfish was Rs 900 per kg, mackerel (Rs 300) and prawns (Rs 400).
Some fish was being sold in frozen packets as well.
Fish vendors hope to get a better and larger supply of fish to meet the demand and keep their customers happy.
Local restaurateurs said the government should step in to ensure that there is ample fish available in the markets.
