MARGAO: Fisheries Director Sharmila Monteiro said her department will rope in the coastal police to crack a whip against violations by motorised canoes with below 10 HP motors during the ban period.
“We will seek the assistance of the coastal police to check and come down heavily on the violators. Those who violate the fishing ban will not be spared,” she asserted.
Boat owners from Cutbona and Vasco fishing jetties have raised eyebrows over the government’s decision to relax the fishing ban for motorised canoes with below 10 HP motors.
Says Sydney Furtado, president of Vasco Fishing Owners Association: “The government has only added a loophole with this decision. Tomorrow, the fisheries department and the coastal police will throw up their hands and say they have no men and machinery to check any violation by motorised canoes.”
