Following HC directives, MMC approves action plan to tackle garbage issue at Sonsoddo dump

MARGAO: Taking into consideration directives issued by the High Court of Bombay at Goa, the Margao Municipal Council  decided to shoulder  the responsibilities of tackling the garbage issue at Sonsoddo dump yard. 

At a special meeting held on Tuesday, the council approved the proposed action plan to be submitted to the court and as per the resolution passed at the meeting, the civic body will implement the action plan under the guidance of Levinson Martins, Managing Director, Goa Waste Management Corporation (GWMC). 

The approved action plan will be forwarded to Levinson Martins for further verification and an affidavit will be filed before the High Court in this regard, informed Manuel Barretto, Chief Officer, Margao Municipal Council. 

Chairperson Damodar Shirodkar stated that the Goa Waste Management Corporation (GWMC) will not be in the picture but everything will be handled by the council for which work has been already initiated. 

As per the action plan, the compositing platform will be constructed for windrow composting on the western side of the old plant to treat the wet waste, a shed will be erected over the concrete platform on the western side of the plan, bulk waste generators will be declared and directions will be issued to treat their waste on their own, besides tank will be constructed for leachate collection with drainage system and tarring of road. 

“Action plan will be finalized before the next hearing in the High Court pertaining to the Sonsoddo dump yard issue and the result will be seen in the next few months of time period as the council has taken this issue very seriously”, said Chairperson. 

He also informed that waste dumped inside the old plant will be also tackled and for which a tender will be floated to dispose of the waste which is approximately 10,000 tons. 

On the other hand, as per the approval given for outsourcing of door to door collection of Municipal solid waste tender has been allotted to Green Globe Self Help Group and Bapu Environmental Social Service Organization. Hence, the civic body will not collect the waste from ward number 15 and 16 as per the earlier plans. 

At the meeting, council also gave approval for administrative approval and expenditure sanction under 14th finance commission fund for erection of transformer, metering and related infrastructure at Sonsoddo garbage treatment plant for an amount of Rs. 51.7 lakh.
