FOR A WHOLE MONTH: Palyem is dry as PWD fails to supply water

Residents are forced to walk a long distance to fetch water from a natural spring, acute shortage also sparks health and hygiene concerns

PERNEM: As flyovers and airports get inaugurated, let us look at the other less visible side of ‘development’.

Residents of Palyem village in Pernem taluka have been left without water for over a month as the PWD taps have run dry.

Savita Palyekar, a housewife complained saying, “It’s been more than a month now that we haven’t received a single drop of water from the PWD taps. Luckily, we use water from a natural spring for our daily household work. Tankers supply water to houses which are by the roadside but the ones in the interiors don’t get a single drop

On account of no water, the locals further claimed that they are forced to walk a long distance to fetch water from a natural spring for their daily household work and drinking purpose. But as one housewife says, “This natural spring is the only option for us. But the water here is not completely safe for consumption as we may fall sick.”

Maria D’Costa, a senior citizen said, “Our problem will be solved only when PWD starts releasing water through the taps. There is no proper road leading to the spring.  We availed of tap connections because we wanted water, but what is the point of having the connection when there is no water?”

“We request that at least for an hour water should be released every day or on alternate days,” another housewife requested.
