For burglars its raining gold in Salcete.

Robbers, burglars and thieves made merry in Salcete this week with the men-in-uniform groping in the dark over the spate of thefts in the taluka.

Friday saw miscreants striking gold not only in Nuvem, where an elderly lady was robbed of her gold ornaments, but also at Benaulim and Aquem. While Colva police stated that burglars burgled a house at Benaulim, a 70-year old woman fell victim to the machinations of thieves impersonating as cops at Aquem. Information revealed that senior citizen Savita Redkar was relieved of her gold ornaments at Aquem as she was returning home. Two unknown miscreants approached her posing as policemen and relieved her of her gold chain worth Rs 1.20 lakh. Incidentally, the police have obtained no clues in the burglaries at Navelim and Benaulim, besides the daring daylight robbery at Nuvem. When asked if there was any breakthrough in the Navelim burglaries, Margao Police station in-charge, PI Sudesh Naik merely said that investigations are underway. The sensational burglary at two apartments earlier this week sent shock waves in Salcete. Burglars made away with gold and cash, all amounting to Rs 16.50 lakh.
Meanwhile, the Margao police has nabbed Praveen Kavlekar, a native of Sawantwadi-Sindhudurg, on suspicion of attempting to burgle an apartment in the heart of town. While Praveen was nabbed during routine patrolling, his accomplice is believed to have made good his escape.
