PANJIM: While welcoming the setting up of the State Forensic Laboratory and Forensic University in Goa, Director General of Police (DGP) Mukesh Kumar Meena also shared an overview of the steps being taken by Goa Police, which he said will have an impact in the near future.
While addressing the media persons, the DGP explained how Goa is currently short when it came to forensic science resources and how the laboratory and university will help improve and quicken the ability of the police to solve crimes that occur in Goa.
He explained how forensic science is needed right from the time the crime occurs and then during the investigation as well. He admitted that presently, Goa is short of experts and felt through the university, experts with specific expertise will be produced which will help the State police as well.
He explained that documentary examination, DNA testing, fingerprint analysis, securing and ascertaining all the elements at the scene of the crime are important tasks that these experts can carry out.
“Right now Goa Police are sending the samples to laboratories outside Goa. But that will change now. We are trying to provide some facilities at the laboratory in Goa like testing of DNA and fingerprinting immediately and we are also working on getting those other facilities that we don’t have at present as well. All this is top priority for us,” said the DGP.
He pointed out that once the students of the Forensic University graduate and thereafter complete their training, then there will be a pool of experts readily available as well and they do not have to wait on experts from outside the State always.
When asked about the comments made by Union Home Minister Amit Shah who laid the foundation stone for the University on Thursday, about using more forensic mobile vans, the DGP said that right now the State already has a mobile van but more such vans would definitely help strengthen their resources.
He also said mobile vans help the police in quick forensic examination and during an investigation time is of the essence too.
