PANJIM: Former minister Somnath Zuwarkar succumbed to COVID-19 on Tuesday night. He was 74.

Zuwarkar was admitted to a private hospital at Vasco after he tested positive for coronavirus.
Zuwarkar was elected three times as MLA on Congress ticket from Taleigao constituency in 1989, 1994 and 1999 Assembly elections.
Zuwarkar started his political career as a panchayat member in 1979 and was the sarpanch of Taleigao panchayat for 10 years from 1979 to 1989.
Zuwarkar held portfolios such as Transport, Panchayat, Civil Supplies, Cooperation, Rural Development Agency and Inland Water Transport.
Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, Union Minister Shripad Naik, Cabinet ministers Vishwajit Rane and Jennifer Monserrate, Leader of the Opposition Digambar Kamat and Porvorim MLA Rohan Khaunte have condoled the death of Zuwarkar.
Sawant said, “Deeply saddened by the passing away of former Cabinet Minister of Goa Somnath Juwarkar. My deepest condolences to the family in this hour of grief. May God give them strength to bear this great loss.”
Shripad Naik said, “Saddened to hear demise of former Cabinet Minister Somnath Zuwarkar. My deepest condolences to the family. Om Shanti.”
Rane said, “Extremely saddened by the passing away of Somnath Juwarkar, former Cabinet Minister and a very close relative of my family. He will be dearly missed. My deepest condolences to the bereaved family. May his soul rest in eternal peace.”
”Saddened to hear the demise of former minister and ex-MLA of Taleigao, Somnath Zuwarkar. My deepest condolences to his bereaved family and all well-wishers. May his soul rest in peace,” Jennifer Monserrate tweeted.
Digambar Kamat said he was saddened by the passing away of former minister Somnath Juwarkar. “My condolences to his family. May his Aatma attain sadgati”.
Khaunte said, “Extremely saddened by the demise of Somnath Juwarkar. He was close to our family and will be missed sorely. As an ex-Minister and MLA from Taleigao, his service to the people will be remembered forever. Deepest condolences to his family.”
The Goa Union of Journalists (GUJ) has also condoled the death of former minister Somnath Zuwarkar.
