PANJIM: Goa’s mining baron and former Independent MLA Anil Salgaocar skipped SIT summons on Monday citing medical grounds. His sons Arjun and Sameer were summoned to appear on Wednesday, when former minister Joaquim Alemao will also be questioned in connection with the multi-crore illegal mining scam.
S Kantilal and Co Ltd additional director Mukesh Sanglani was grilled for nearly three hours by investigating officer PI Rahul Parab on Monday. He is likely to be called again with case-related documents.
Sources said Salgaocar has been undergoing treatment for the last few months, which will continue for another few weeks. “Once he recovers, he will be issued fresh summons,” the source said.
SIT in 2014 had registered a criminal offence against Salgaocar and Alemao under the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act and Forest Conservation Act, 1980.
The case pertains to a complaint filed by Mines Director Prasanna Acharya accusing Kantilal and Co Ltd of carrying out illegal mining and ore extraction, supported by a monitoring committee report in the year 2009.
The mining lease at Sanguem had Salgaocar as its director and Alemao as the raising contractor.
