Four-day Goa Assembly session starts today

PANJIM: A brief four-day winter session of Goa Assembly will commence at the Goa Assembly Complex, Porvorim at 11:30 am from Monday, January 16.

The session will begin with the customary address by Governor P S Sreedharan Pillai being the first session of the New Year. After the Governor’s address, Speaker Ramesh Tawadkar will make obituary references of the demise of the distinguished dignitaries/luminaries.

namely late Emeritus Benedict XVI, former Pope; late Heeraben Modi, mother of Prime Minister Narendra Modi; late J J Irani and Cyrus Mistry, industrialists; late Juliao Caridade De Souza and Krupavant Lanjekar, freedom fighters; late Dr Joe D’Souza, environmentalist; late Cirilo Fernandes and Mathias Correa alias Comedian Selvy, tiatr artistes; late Dominique Lapierre, author; late Gurudas Singbal and Anant Salkar, journalists and football legend Pele.

The Speaker will  also make congratulatory references to Jagdeep Dhankhar on being elected as the 14th Vice President of India; Argentina football team for winning the World Cup; Bhakti Kulkarni for winning Arjuna Award in Chess; Maya Kharangate for winning the Sahitya Akademi Award for her novel “Amrutvel‟; Fr Myron Barreto, noted litterateur for winning the Sahitya Akademi Yuva Puraskar 2022 for literary work “Tallo‟ (The Voice) and Jyoti Kunkoliekar for winning the Sahitya Akademi Bal Sahitya Puraskar 2022 for her children’s novel “Mayuri‟; Master Ethan Vaz for winning the Asian Youth Championship in chess in Indonesia. 

According to Secretary (Legislature) Namrata Ulman, the legislature department has received as many as 134 starred question and 475 unstarred questions and 13 government bills to be tabled during the session. 

Two days have been reserved for discussion on motion of thanks to Governor’s address while, the last day has been reserved for discussion on the Mhadei River issue amid protests underway in the State over diversion of water by Karnataka.

Also Supplementary Demands (Second Batch) for the financial year 2022-2023 will be presented, discussed and passed. The House will also condole the death of two former ministers Pandurang Raut and Shivdas Shet Verekar on the second day.
