MARGAO: Writer and freedom fighter Madhav Pandit from Margao died at the age of 82 on Wednesday. He was unwell for quite some time and died at 6 am at a private hospital in Margao. Madhav Pandit is remembered for his satyagraha at Terekhol fort in the early 50s and is author of several books.
He is survived by his widow Hemalata Pandit, two sons Dattatray and Gautam Pandit.
Madhav Pandit was born on April 24, 1935 in Khandepar. When he was studying in Pune he participated in the Goa’s freedom struggle. After having a Satyagraha at Terekhol Fort on September 16, 1954 he was jailed for four years. After release, he completed his education and from 1962 till 1995 he taught at Mahila Nutan School in Margao. He played a pivotal role in giving the rights of pay scale to teachers.
He further established the Gomantak Rashtrabhasha University and professed Hindi to the society. Madhav Pandit has established Swarmanch organisation. Pandit has been awarded with the National Teachers Award in 1989. He authored Trivedh, Kartrutvachya Daahi Disha, Madhyamik Shikshan in his lifetime and has got award from Vidya Niketan Margao for his book Madhyamik Shikshan.
