MARGAO: Beef eating Goans can look forward for fresh beef later this week once the logistics are put in place, with the Goa Meat Complex even drawing up both short and long term plans to float tender for beef procurement from abattoirs across the borders.
Conceding that beef supplied to the cold storages across the state on Saturday was frozen, Goa Meat Complex Chairman Lyndon Monteiro said that the frozen beef was procured on Saturday to tide over the acute beef shortage and to ensure the beef supplied to the people is hygienic.
“The GMC has placed orders for plastic crates from Tamil Nadu to bring in fresh beef from across the border. Once we are in receipt of the crates and necessary prior permission is obtained from the Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) Goa and the FDA from source of the beef supply, we will bring in fresh beef for supply to the traders,” he said, adding that fresh beef could not be supplied to the traders without the logistics since it normally takes around 4-5 hours for transportation of the perishable commodity.
Replying to a question, Lyndon said the Meat Complex will soon float a tender inviting abattoir from across the border to supply beef to the Complex. Another tender will be floated inviting people to get their animals slaughtered at the Goa Meat Complex and supply the beef to the traders, he said.
When his attention was drawn to the fact that the rates of beef remains unchanged, Lyndon said the meat complex has only charged the traders handling charges, including transportation of the consignment from the abattoir.
