CANACONA: Canacona has reported a sudden surge in COVID cases as the taluka, which had zero active cases as on February 26, saw 35 persons testing positive for the infection.

Canacona Community Health Centre (CHC) sources informed that of 35 patients, 32 have opted for home isolation; two have been admitted to District Hospital, Margao while the whereabouts of the lone patient are not known.

Health Officer and CHC in-charge Dr Jose Tavares informed that 13 patients tested positive for COVID-19 in Agonda, while Chaudi reported 7 cases followed by Loliem (6), Karvem (4), Rajbag (4) and one patient still not traceable.

Twenty patients, who underwent tests on Sunday and Monday, tested negative for COVID-19, Dr Tavares informed. “Till date, Canacona has reported 888 cases, of which 35 are active with 44 persons succumbing to the infection,” Dr Tavares said.

Dr Tavares said he and his staff have carried out contact tracing and survey in Agonda and Rajbag as several cases were detected in these areas. “We went house-to-house and advised people to come for COVID-19 testing. However, only a handful approached us at the hospital for testing,” Dr Tavares said.

It is pertinent to note that 871 persons have been administered the COVID-19 vaccine in Canacona, which include 235 healthcare staff, 383 frontline workers, 253 senior citizens and those between 45 and 59 years with comorbidities.
