PANJIM: National Students Union of India, Goa Unit, has issued a memorandum to Goa government demanding immediate allocation of funds for setting up counseling cells and starting stress management classes in all educational institutions, since it was promised in the budget.
Addressing a press conference at Congress House Monday, NSUI Goa President Hasiba Amin said they expect that the funds should be released soon.
“We were happy when Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar announced a budget allocation for the counseling cells in the last budget session. But it’s sad and unfortunate that there is no implementation yet,” she said.
In 2012, the NSUI along with COOJ Mental Health Institute had started a massive campaign demanding that the government have counseling cells and stress management class in every education institute. The members had also met the Vice Chancellor and the Director of Technical Education to get their support.
“We therefore also requested the education minister to allocate funds for counseling cells in colleges as well, as mental illness and suicides are common even among college students,” Hasiba added.
The NSUI has also been demanding that legal education session be started for which, a memorandum has been submitted to Goa University’s vice chancellor to seek an appointment for discussing the matter, Hasiba said.
“We want that either a subject on basic legal education should be introduced or a compulsory session/workshop is held at least once a semester for students’ empowerment,” she said,
