MARGAO: Yet another fire incident was reported in Margao on Wednesday, as garbage dumped in massive quantities by the roadside along the ring road at Margao caught fire, raising eyebrows over the civic body’s handling and managing of garbage in the State’s commercial capital.
However it is suspected that the workers engaged by the Margao Municipal Council (MMC) deliberately set the waste on fire.
It may be recalled that earlier this month a fire incident was reported at Sonsoddo.
After receiving information about the fire incident the personnel of Fire and Emergency Services rushed to the site. Many residents witnessed that the workers engaged by the civic body setting fire to the waste, which was dumped on a massive scale.
It is pertinent to note that the ring road near the Power House has become yet another waste dumping ground. Several residents are noticed dumping garbage here at night, causing nuisance in the area. The entire stretch of the ring road has turned into another Sonsoddo.
According to Gil Souza, Fire Station Officer at Margao they used two fire tenders to douse the fire.
“Many residents have brought to our notice that the municipal workers are involved in setting fire to the waste by the roadside along the ring road. We have also witnessed the same”, he said.
However, MMC Chief Officer Agnelo Fernandes assured to initiate an inquiry into the matter after there were allegations that the civic body workers set the waste on fire.
“I will inquire into the matter and strict action will be taken against those responsible for setting the waste on fire”, he said.
