MARGAO: The Navelim Gram Sabha passed a resolution objecting to the diversion of Mhadei River and wanting the Central government to revoke the approval granted to the Karnataka government’s Detailed Project Report (DPR).
Gram sabaha members also said that as a sign of protest, dumping flowers into the river is acceptable, but the dumping of plastic waste is condemnable. The issue of garbage management in the village was discussed at length. The panchayat was questioned about the measures it has taken to keep the village clean. It was also suggested that CCTV cameras be installed to catch miscreants who dump waste by the roadside.
There was also an uproar over the allegedly illegal scrapyards that are situated near the panchayat building itself. There were demands for strict action against such polluting and unsafe businesses. There was another demand for replacing the overhead electricity lines, as they are nearly two decades old.
