MARGAO: The Colva Panchayat seems to be finally getting its act together to solve the burning issue of garbage facing the coastal village.
While the panchayat has earmarked an amount of Rs 60 lakh to acquire land admeasuring 2,200 sq mts for waste segregation, high degree compacting machines from Denmark will soon come in the village to compact the waste at source.
Sarpanch Snowkon Gonsalves said the Goa State Pollution control Board has given its NOC for the land acquisition for the proposed waste segregation, adding that the process to acquire the land in question has already got underway.
Replying to a question, he said panch member Calvert Gonsalves has proposed to install Denmark machines for compacting the waste at source. “We will see how effective these machines are to treat waste. A demonstration will be held no sooner these machines arrive from Denmark,” he added.
Panch Calvert said high-degree compacting machines will also compact wet waste to a ration of 10:1 and dispatched the same to piggeries belonging to locals within the village. “This in itself will create another avenue to generate income for locals. Therefore, there will be no problem of stink and infestation of carpets of flies that other waste dumping sites are facing,” he said.
Replying to a question, he said that segregation of dry waste will be done by the panchayat at a place in Colva for which the local body has moved for land acquisition. “At the moment, we have alternate plans to carry out dry waste segregation. Nothing will be kept on site but carried away by a vehicle,” Calvert added.
He said the tetra packs will be transported by a recycler in North Mumbai. “Rubber slippers will be shredded and sent to a company manufacturing boxing punching bags. In due course of a year, all types of garbage will disappear in the most eco-friendly manner,” he added.
