Garbage dump in Margao upsets residents

Residents and businesses are facing tremendous problems due to air pollution, unhygienic conditions, rodent, vermin and pests issues

MARGAO: Unhappy over the delays by Margao Municipality in clearing the garbage dumped in the area marked for the multi-level parking project, residents from the locality have urged the concerned authorities for immediate support and action to safeguard their lives during the incessant rains.

In a letter to Chief Minister Pramod Sawant and other authorities, residents have requested a better Margao city for their present and future by creating a healthy environment, just as it was in the past.

Speaking to media persons, Ryan Colaco said that the garbage mismanagement in the area meant for the parking project, which is just behind the Municipal building, has resulted in major health hazards. “Waste Management is an important element of environmental protection, its purpose is to provide hygienic, efficient and economic solid waste storage, collection, transportation and treatment or disposal of waste without polluting the atmosphere, soil, or water system,” he stated.

He further claimed that the residents and businesses are facing tremendous problems due to air pollution, unhygienic conditions, rodent, vermin and pests issues, filthy smell, unhealthy living conditions and possible soil pollution due to the unorganized and haphazard dumping of garbage in the housing and business neighbourhood.

“This issue is a major concern and if not resolved immediately, may cause serious health problems to people, as they cannot open their doors and windows due to the gravely depreciated air quality and the garbage which is a very dirty sight,” said Nick Colaco.
