PORVORIM: Residents at Goa Housing Board Colony, behind Kavlekar Supermarket Porvorim, have threatened to stop paying garbage fees to Penha de Franca Panchayat, if it failed to take action against those dumping garbage in the open spaces in the area.
Though Penha de Franca Panchayat has acquired 1,000 square metres of land on lease for 99 years from Goa Housing Board (GHB) to segregate garbage, waste is still being dumped in the open spaces in the area.
Recently, a truck was seen unloading garbage in the open space close to residential colony behind Kavlekar Supermarket. Penha de Franca Panchayat has been collecting garbage on door-to-door basis in some wards, while garbage is being dumped in the open spaces.
It may be recalled that Penha de Franca Panchayat had launched cleanliness drive on March 24, 2011, and plastic free drive was undertaken by the panchayat. Minister for Environment Alina Saldanha had laid the foundation stone on January 26, 2013, for the garbage treatment plant even though there was opposition from the locals.
Speaking to Herald, people residing in the colony behind Kavlekar Supermarket said they are paying charges to the panchayat to collect garbage from their flats. “We see trucks dumping garbage in the open space in the vicinity of the Colony,” complained a resident.
“The panchayat should stop this, failing which we will stop paying charges to the panchayat and we will also start dumping garbage in open spaces,” warned the local.
