VASCO: The Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) has decided to renovate the municipal building at an estimated cost of Rs 7 crore.
With the garbage at the Sada dump finding its way on the road, the MMC has however said that there are no takers for the work tender to solve the garbage issue. The Liberation Day holiday for MMC workers has resulted in heaps of garbage finding its way on the road at Sada. Councillor Sandesh Mesta informed that on account of the public holiday the MMC workers and machine operator at the Sada garbage dump site were absent and the truck operators on Thursday dumped garbage along the road side.
Jayesh Shetgaonkar, a local from Sada said, “Our MLAs and Chairperson give big talk of works worth crores of rupees however there is no work or solution to long pending problems till date”.
Surprisingly, the MMC has decided to take up renovation work of the municipal building at Rs 7 crore. Mesta has admitted that the garbage problem has gone out of hand. The plant at Sada faces frequent breakdowns due to its low capacity.
Meanwhile, Urban Development Minister Milind Naik has announced the MMC building renovation plan.
“The entire MMC building will be renovated at Rs 7 crore. The work has been tendered and will begin soon. The entire building excluding structural changes will be taken up. The renovation will be held in two phases. Before renovating the building, the MMC plans to shift the municipal school. The renovation work hasn’t received any takers at present.
Mesta informed that they have discussed the matter with the minister and have decided to solve the garbage dump issue soon.
However the Chief Officer Angelo Fernandes said, “The work has been tendered but there are no takers. Meanwhile, BITS Pilani College has taken some load of treating the wet waste but more efforts are needed”.
The residents of Sada had submitted a memorandum to the MMC to solve the garbage issue and start waste segregation in the town.
