A gas leakage at Verna Industrial Estate on Wednesday morning led to an emergency response as the leaked gas, stemming from a damaged pipeline during excavation, raised concerns. The Fire and Emergency Services (FES) mobilized to the scene, ensuring an efficient resolution. The specific type of gas involved in the incident remains unknown.
Herbert Fernandes, a fire officer, stated that they received the call at 10:45 am, and rushed to the site. “When we arrived, we observed a significant leak, with labourers applying mud over the pipe to contain the escalation of gas. Considering the proximity of a transformer, the electricity department was contacted to cut power. The gas company officials were summoned to shut down the gas line, which was successfully executed,” Fernandes reported.
With these measures in place, the gas subsided, and the area was declared safe after thorough assessments.
