The Goa Chamber of Commerce and Industries (GCCI) has credited the Traffic Sentinel Scheme with brining down the number of deaths due to accidents, despite the number of two-wheelers having gone up by a whopping 68.95% in 2018. Stating that efficient traffic management is an important part of any transport system, which includes safety and adherence to traffic regulations, GCCI has pointed out that in the past few years non-adherence to safety and traffic regulations has resulted in large number of deaths on the Goan roads. Presenting its rationale for supporting the Traffic Sentinel Scheme, GCCI argues that, “The ratio of traffic police to vehicles in Goa being a mere 1: 2428, it is difficult, if not impossible, to ensure compliance of traffic regulations.” Therefore, “the new Traffic Sentinel Scheme has not only motivated the general public to participate in traffic management system of the State but also empowered them to highlight irregularities and violations of traffic rules and most importantly, given them the ability to ensure compliance,” the GCCI said in a press release issued here.
