A declaration was made in the United Kingdom, where India and 27 other countries, along with the European Union, pledged to collaborate on assessing the risks associated with artificial intelligence (AI). The participating countries included Australia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Kenya, Saudi Arabia, Netherlands, Nigeria, The Philippines, the Republic of Korea, Rwanda, Singapore, Spain, Switzerland, Turkey, Ukraine, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, the United States of America, and the European Union.
The declaration, known as the Bletchley Park Declaration, focuses on the opportunities and risks of cutting-edge AI systems and the need for international action in addressing these challenges. It highlights the potential of AI to benefit human well-being and prosperity but emphasizes the importance of ensuring that AI is designed and used in a safe, human-centric, trustworthy, and responsible manner.
The declaration also recognizes the significant role of AI in various aspects of daily life, including housing, employment, transport, education, health, accessibility, and justice. It acknowledges the need for international efforts to address the potential impact of AI systems, including protecting human rights, transparency, fairness, accountability, regulation, safety, oversight, ethics, bias mitigation, privacy, and data protection.
To address AI risks, the participating nations pledge to work together at both the national and international levels, focusing on shared concerns and building a scientific understanding of these risks. They commit to supporting an inclusive network of scientific research on AI safety, collaborating through existing international forums and initiatives to provide the best science for policy-making and the public good.
Union Minister of State for Electronics and IT Rajeev Chandrasekhar emphasized India’s approach to AI, focusing on openness, safety, trust, and accountability. He highlighted the importance of international collaborations in the rapidly evolving field of technology.
The objectives of the summit held at Bletchley Park, led by UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, are to foster a shared understanding of AI risks and organize a global effort to mitigate them.
