But the shock didn’t come with the pain but from humiliation. The doctor who was about to check her, snapped and angrily told the couple to leave midway through the examination, when they revealed they were from Vasco

A paranoid doctor treated a patient in the state’s main hospital, with state of the art facilities and the best doctors, as untouchables because they are from a town and taluka which has seen the maximum number of COVID cases. But while civil society has stigmatized Vasco, we know know that it doesn’t stop even at the doors of GMC.
Still reeling with shock, Gaurish Volvoikar spoke about his trauma and humiliation to Herald. Gaurish narrated that his wife had a fall two months ago, on Saturday due to the severe pain in her backbone the couple decided to visit GMC and seek medical advice from the doctors. “On Saturday morning on July 18, we arrived at GMC, gave our details at the counter and from there we were referred to the Casualty room, where the doctors initially did a casual check-up of my wife and then started inquiring about where we came from.”
Volvoikar said that after learning that the couple has come from the Vasco, the doctor reacted sharply and asked Volvoikar and his wife to get out of the GMC premises. “This was the most embarrassing and humiliating moment of my life for me and my wife. She started to leave immediately while I was simply shocked and startled trying to process what had happened,” Volvoikar said.
“The humiliation was of such intensity that I chose to make a social media video so that such incidents should come to the notice of the people. I also asked doctors to put a board stating that people from Vasco are not welcome in GMC”, Volvoikar narrated.
Understandably upset, Volvoikar spoke for all Goans when he said, “I can’t understand how can a doctor behave with his patient in such a way. It is indeed disgraceful and sets a bad example”.
