GMC harvests organs of brain dead woman patient

PANJIM: Goa Medical College and Hospital, Bambolim on Monday harvested organs of a woman patient, who was declared brain dead.

This is the second case where GMC has harvested organs after establishing the State Organ Tissue Transplant Organisation (SOTTO) in the State.

The patient’s brother also posted on Facebook about the organ harvesting. She was exponent of the Indian classical dances such as the Bharatnatyam, Odissi, etc, he said.

“She is the only the second person in Goa to have donated all her organs, despite all the hurdles, her loving family has adhered to her wishes. She will always live on and her family will be proud of her forever,” the brother posted on Facebook.

Meanwhile, the Goa Police also provided green corridor as the liver was flown to the IKDRC Hospital, Ahmedabad-Gujarat while, both the kidneys were on Tuesday transplanted to two male patients who were on waiting list of the GMC.

The heart and lungs of the brain dead person could not be given as there were “weak and non-functional”, informed the GMC sources. 

On his official Facebook page, Health Minister Vishwajit Rane posted, “The Goa Medical College in its continued efforts to save lives has conducted yet another successful case of Organ Retrieval and Transplant from a Brain Dead Donor under the Deceased Donor Transplant Programme of SOTTO Goa.”

A 62-year-old woman, who was admitted for subarachnoid haemorrhage, after a clinical diagnosis, was declared brain dead. Her family stepped forward and requested for organ donation of the deceased.

Their gesture has saved three lives, the donated organs shall be transplanted to recipients as per the sequential order in the SOTTO ROTTO registry.
