PANJIM: Following strong opposition to the State government’s recent decision to increase the tuition fees for Goa Dental College (GDC) students, the Under Secretary (Health) issued order that saw the same fees being reduced from Rs 1 lakh per semester to Rs 48,000 per semester.

Library fees which were Rs 5,000 per semester have been reduced to Rs 1,000, while the one-time admission fee of Rs 15,000 has been reduced to Rs 1,000. Hostel fees are Rs 2,000 per semester.

“The excess fees paid to the students shall be refunded or adjusted in future payments due, if any. Further the government has decided that henceforth, every academic year, the tuition fees for all courses at Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMC), GDC fees shall stand revised by 5% automatically every year, till the government considers further revision,” read the order.

It may be recalled that besides GDC students, MLAs namely Vijai Sardesai, Rohan Khaunte and the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) had protested against this citing the tough financial burden it would impose.
