PANJIM: The India Meteorological Observatory (IMD), Altinho, Panjim, has issued red colour warning for Goa for the next 48 hours and predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall at few places across the State.
It has also forecast extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places over the next two days and heavy to very heavy rainfall likely at a few places across the State on June 10 and 11, the IMD said, adding that monsoon has been active over the coastal State.
The State witnessed moderate rainfall, and very heavy showers in some parts during the last 24 hours.
The daily rainfall recorded (in mm) for 24 hours ending at 8.30 am on Saturday at various rain gauge stations in Goa is as follows: Canacona – 192.2, Sanquelim – 184.2, Quepem- 170.2, Sanguem – 153.7, Margao – 143, Mormugao – 58.8, Ponda – 58.0, Dabolim – 52.1, Old Goa – 44.3, Panjim – 37.9, Mapusa – 31.0 and Pernem – 22.4.
The IMD has issued a red alert for Sunday, June 9 and June 10, forecasting that moderate to heavy rainfall was very likely over North and South Goa districts. It has also issued an orange alert for June 11 and 12.
Visibility may become poor due to intense spells of rainfall causing traffic congestion. There could be water logging and the uprooting of trees may affect the power supply, it said.
The IMD has also warned about the possibility of floods due to intense spells of rain.
