PANJIM: The Customs and Central Excise has sought the cell phone call records of the two Sri Lankan nationals, who were arrested at Dabolim airport, from the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), New Delhi. The duo was arrested for allegedly attempting to smuggle gold into the country last month.
The sleuths have conceded that they are finding it difficult to make further headway in the case. Commissioner V P C Rao, however, asserted that they are nonetheless, making all possible efforts to collect more evidence against them and trace the key player.
“The duo had purchased SIM cards in Delhi. We have sought their call details from the DRI,” he said when asked about the status of the investigation in the case.
The Customs sleuths had arrested three persons Mohd Hamza and Mohd Safraz, both from Sri Lanka and Kerala-native Pallikal Ibrahim in the wee hours of August 20 and seized 4.129 kg gold worth Rs 1.33 crore at Dabolim.
While the Sri Lankan carriers had concealed the gold in their rectum, Ibrahim had strapped the yellow metal to his body under the trouser. All the three are already out on bail.
Rao said they are contemplating to challenge their bail in the District and Sessions Court.
The commissioner also said that all domestic and international airports across the country will be intimated about the case against the trio so that a close watch could be maintained during their air-travels henceforth.
