PANJIM: As the five-year tenure of the eleven municipal councils ends on Wednesday, the State government is set to appoint Administrators to oversee the affairs of the municipalities.

The council of Mormugao, Margao, Mapusa, Bicholim, Cuncolim, Curchorem, Quepem, Canacona, Sanguem, Pernem and Valpoi was elected on October 27, 2015.

The State Election Commission (SEC) had proposed to conduct the polls for elect new council on October 18.

However, due to worsening COVID-19 crisis, the polls were postponed by three months.

Sources informed that the government has zeroed upon 11 Goa Civil Service Officers, who would be appointed as the Administrators.

“The order in this regard will be issued shortly,” sources said.

The Administrator would be above the Chief Municipal Officer (CMO).

Meanwhile, as reported earlier, the elections for 11 municipal councils and the Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) will be held by end of February, 2021.

The Administrators are also looking after the affairs of North and South Goa Zilla Panchayats, where the elections were due in March.
