Panjim: While appreciating the efforts of the Election Commission of India (ECI), Goa unit for conduct of fair, free and transparent election processes, the Goa Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari on Monday called upon the voters to ensure that their every vote is towards “Nation and State” building and not to benefit one individual, religion, caste or community.

He was speaking while addressing the National Voters’ Day programme organized by the Chief Electoral Office (CEO). Every year, ECI celebrates the National Voters’ day on January 25, since 2011, to mark the foundation day of ECI, held on the same day in 1950. The main purpose of the day celebration is to encourage, facilitate and maximize enrolment, especially for the new voters.

The Governor added that in the last 70 years there has been a lot of awakening amongst the voters; who have realized the power of their vote.

“We voters need to be awakened to the very fact that, when we go out to vote, we are not voting to elect a MLA of one particular religion or caste or community. We need to understand that we are voting to build a nation…to build our State…,” he said.

He added that it is important for voters to understand their responsibility towards Nation and State. “We have to vote and elect a right candidate,” he commented.

Koshyari congratulated the election officers for ensuring smooth, fair, free and transparent election processes, so far. He, however, cautioned the officers to be alert to ensure no mischief played with the electoral roll, under any political pressure.

Speaking earlier, CEO IAS Kunal informed that the office will soon start preparations for the general elections to the State Assembly, which are due in 2022.

He also informed that during the Special Summary revision, a total of 17,259 new voters were added to the list while 8,854 names were deleted on various grounds.

As per the latest electoral roll, the total eligible voters in the State are 11,44,987.
