MARGAO: Even as the July 2 flood affected victims of Cuncolim have protested against the meager compensation provided by the district administration, Rajya Sabha MP Shantaran Naik on Sunday asserted that Goa has not sought any additional funds for flood victims in the State.
The MP further informed that he has already recommended to the South Goa district Collector to spend Rs 1 lakh from his MPLAD scheme for the Cuncolim flood victims, adding that the collector was now free to utilise the funds and that nothing remains to be done by him.
He said that Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Mullapally Ramchandran informed him in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha, last week, that no memorandum has been submitted by the State government seeking additional financial assistance to give relief to flood victims in Goa. “The Minister informed me that as per the information received from the Government of Goa, 139 houses have been reported damaged due to the natural disaster caused by heavy rainfall during south west monsoon 2013,” he added.
