PONDA: Art and Culture Minister Govind Gaude on Tuesday informed the State government is making efforts for getting environment clearance for commencing of traditional sand extraction activities in the State.

When asked about ban on traditional sand extraction activities and on that backdrop demand made by traditional sand extractors at Priol for either legalisation of their activity or government pay them monthly financial dole,

Gaude said, “Currently the sand extraction matter is sub judice and it is not right to comment on it.”

He said, “Efforts are on for getting environmental clearance. No sand extractors are struggling to earn livelihood in COVID-19 pandemic time. However, this is not only the issue of sand extractors at Priol but of the entire State.”

Gaude cleared the air saying neither any MLA or the Government of Goa had stopped the sand activities. It is halted after complaints again and again filed by the locals. Some politicians are trying to find political mileage from it.

“Last year in order to find a solution I had arranged a meeting of traditional sand extractors with the top government officials including North and South Goa District Collectors,” he added.

“There is a process for conducting study with regard to sand extraction zones from various rivers in Goa including Mandovi, where traditional sand extractors from Volovi, Amona, Savoi Verem are extracting sand. The study report would be submitted to National Green Tribunal and then the clearance would be obtained from Ministry of Environment. I am also following the matter with Chief Minister with regard to issuing licence and legalising the sand extraction,” Gaude said.

He said, “The government had not stopped the activity but some locals are also complaining against sand extractions and as the matter is in court the legal action is taken following complaints against sand extractions.”
