PANJIM: Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said that the government is contemplating to regularise all those houses which have sprouted on the government land nearly 30 to 40 years ago.

Speaking at a programme at Sanguem, Sawant said that the government will legalise and give them ownership rights so that no injustice is done to those residing in these houses. Stating that the people have got the habit of encroaching on the government land but, he assured that the government will not demolish these structures because they have built about 30 to 40 years ago and residing.

The government will conduct a survey of every such structure and mark their property and bestow them with ownership rights along with surrounding area.

“If the Chief Minister plans to go ahead with the regularisation of structures on comunidade lands then it would appear to be a back door entry of the Bhumiputra Bill that was opposed by the public and withdrawn later,” said Rosario Menezes, a senior ‘ganvkari’.

“This will be a sham if they try and regularise such structures and we will fight it tooth and nail. This policy decision will cause irreparable damage to comunidades that have been preserved for generations by our ancestors and have been fighting encroachments for years now,” Mensezes said.
