PANJIM: The government has decided to appoint 325 English teachers in all government primary schools at the eighth Cabinet meeting held Wednesday. This would imply financial liability of around Rs 10,64,54,400.
Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar told media that candidates vying for the post would have to have English as their first language at Classes 10th and 12th and possess a degree from a recognized university in English methodology ~ BEd in English. Knowledge of Konkani is compulsory and knowledge of Marathi is desirable.
If the teacher does not have a degree, then the teacher should complete it within 5 years and only then he/she would be confirmed. But English at Classes 10th and 12th is compulsory.
“The teacher will have to teach the language in at least 3 schools or maybe more,” the chief minister said. There are around 953 government primary schools in the State with different mediums of instruction. But as some are functioning in the same building, the number of schools would be 900. About 160 schools have less than 10 students.
However, though 250 teachers would be needed according to department estimates, the government is keeping 30 per cent reserve and arrived at a figure of 325. The proposal to fill the posts has been approved ‘in principle’ and given sanction by the Finance Department and NoC by Administrative Reforms Department.
