Govt proposes 100% pay hike for Municipal Chairpersons

MARGAO: The State government has issued a draft notification proposing changes in remuneration of Chairpersons and councillors of Municipalities in Goa. As per the draft emolument of Chairperson of Class A, B and C Municipalities has been increased from Rs 12,875, Rs 11,475 and Rs 10,800 to Rs 25,000, Rs 22,000 and Rs 20,000 respectively. 

It is proposed to increase remuneration of Councilors of all classes of municipalities to Rs 18,000. The government had sought objects and suggestions to the draft notification within 15 days.

Reacting to this development, the Shadow Council for Margao (SCM) targeted Margao Municipal Council (MMC) that was pushing for this hike.

“The government has only given its decision on the increase in salaries/honorarium to Chairperson’s and Councillors. The bill towards this will eventually be footed by the taxpayers of the respective Council’s, as the government doesn’t provide funds for the same. The 50% increase in the garbage/sanitation fees will facilitate the nearly 100% increase in honorarium to the Chairperson’s/Councillors,” said Savio Coutinho, SCM convenor.
