PANJIM: Hours after gang war rivalry hit St Cruz killing one person, the Opposition targeted Dr Pramod Sawant led BJP government over collapse of law and order situation in the State.

Leader of Opposition Digambar Kamat, Goa Forward Party (GFP) president Vijai Sardesai and Independent MLA Rohan Khaunte hit-out at government for their “celebration” mode (two years completion of Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government), while the safety and security of the people in the State are at risk.
“The shocking incidence of gang war at St Cruz has sent a clear signal of complete collapse of law and order in Goa,” Kamat said in a statement.
He said the economy has already collapsed causing serious hardship to the marginal sector and the common man. “Now the question of people’s safety and security has come to the fore. Unfortunately, the BJP government in Goa is in celebration mode,” former CM said.
Kamat said that it is high-time that the BJP government comes out from its “virtual world” in which there is place for only festivities and celebrations, and rather face the real world.
The Congress leader demanded that Chief Minister should take serious note of the incident and take stern action against the culprits. He said that the party has been warning the government on the rise in crimes, drug trade, prostitution, rapes and murder, since long.
“Unfortunately, the government did not pay any attention to the concerns raised by us. It will be too late if we don’t act now,” he warned.
On the other hand, former deputy CM and GFP president Vijai Sardesai questioned whether this is the ‘Indianisation’ that BJP government keeps talking about. He has demanded President’s Rule in the State.
“Armed gangs…supari killings…extortion! The slow poisoning of our beloved Goa has now reached alarming proportions,” he tweeted.
“Is this ‘joining the mainstream’ that Chief Minister proposes? Goa will not be another Uttar Pradesh and I will not allow,” Sardesai tweeted further.
Sardesai also said the BJP and Chief Minister are busy with virtual rallies and party conferences.
Porvorim Independent MLA Rohan Khaunte said Goa’s law and order situation has miserably collapsed, putting lives of the citizens at a big risk and turning Goa into Goonda Raj.
“St Cruz firing incident and lawlessness at Fatorda have raised several questions on Dr Pramod Sawant’s capability as CM and Home Minister, turning the State into Goonda Raj,” he charged.
He pointed out that such situation is bound to happen in a State, which is without Director General of Police (DGP) since several months, while the Inspector General of Police is busy on COVID duty.
