PANJIM: Huge granite boulders dumped in the sea at Miramar, around 50 metres from the shore, posing threat to small boats plying in the waters.
The granite boulders have been dumped in the area close to where the small boats with tourists onboard are seen plying and it is observed that during the high tide these boulders are not visible, and there is a high possibility that it could lead to an accident.
The granite boulders have been dropped reportedly by the Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (GSIDC) appointed contractor who is constructing walkway-cum-cycle track under project ‘restoration and protection of coastline of Mandovi River from Miramar Beach to Youth hostel and Kala Academy to ESG’ and it is being executed at an estimated cost of Rs 33,68,06,755.11 under the Smart City Mission.
“The granite boulders have been brought and kept for the promenade project and it will be used to protect the wall from wave erosion,” a senior officer of the GSIDC said.
“Presently, the work from Campal to Miramar beach is halted as we are awaiting permission from a starred hotel located on the said stretch. The hotel representative says that their sea view will be blocked and also the privacy of their guests could be invaded if we go ahead with the project. Talks are going on with them at the government level. Once we are granted permission we will resume work. Boulders kept there are not an obstacle for anybody and they will not get washed into the sea. It’s safe,” the officer added.
