PANJIM: In an important decision, the State government has given its green signal to allow institutes affiliated to private universities to set up their extension campuses in Goa. A Bill in this regards is likely to be moved in the upcoming Budget Session of the State Legislative Assembly.
Similarly, the State Law Department is also working on a proposal to have its own law college. However, the move is still in the proposal stage.
State government has received five proposals from private and deemed universities for setting up campus, including a new medical college, in the State. The government is of the opinion that the institutions will help in offering those courses and programmes, which are currently not available in the State.
The move is aimed at curbing brain drain, as a large number of students, move out of the State for higher studies, by paying more fees and improving quality of education.
The Directorate of Higher Education, it is learnt, has drafted the Bill, which has got the go ahead from Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant, who holds the education portfolio.
“The Bill is likely to be tabled during the upcoming Budget session,” sources said adding that the Bill will be placed before Cabinet, next week.
Further, Government is considering to set up its own Law College in the State. There are currently two private law colleges in the State one each in North and South Goa.
“The proposal is still under consideration. We have to also conduct a study, as to how many students on an average opt for law annually,” sources said.
