MARGAO: Accusing the Goa government of Goa of dragging its feet in settling the issue of the seafarers’ pension scheme, members of the Goan Seamen Association of India (GSAI) at their annual general body meeting resolved to demand that the government make the scheme permanent and give recognition to the association.
A meeting chaired by GSAI President Frank Viegas also deliberated on the issues of shortage of forms for the scheme and the fact that no new applicants are considered. “In addition, there is no scrutiny committee in place. Also, the 82 applicants whose applications are approved are not being considered. This will have to be brought to the notice of the Chief Minister and NRI Commissioner,” said Viegas.
All the members resolved to increase the ex- gratia monetary assistance given by National Union Seafarers of India (NUSI) to widows of seafarers from Rs 200 to Rs 1,000 per month. Viegas said that they would also demand that the government introduce Provident Fund, Gratuity and Pension for all ranks of seafarers serving on Indian and foreign flagships of all types; cruise ships and merchant navy.
“Seafarers should be given these facilities with due respect for their contribution towards the maritime industry, so they can retire happily. The members resolved to write to the Shipping Ministry, Director General of shipping and the other authorities concerned, in this regard,” said Viegas.
“Around 6,417 non-members and 4,963 members took assistance or guidance through our office, which benefited the community at large,” added Viegas.
