Goa needs music academies, performance venues of int’l standards: Shankar Mahadevan

PANJIM: Pointing out that Goa lacks top-notch music facilities, music composer and playback singer Shankar Mahadevan on Saturday said that the authorities should consider setting up music academies and performance venues of international standards in the State.

“You need musical institutions of the highest level with good faculty, where you can invite students from across India and also international students,” he added.

While interacting with media persons at the ‘Meet the legend’ event held at the Gera School at Old Goa, Mahadevan said that Goa should have more cultural complexes similar to Kala Academy. “Considering music as an extracurricular activity is not right, it is an important activity that plays a vital role in the all-round development of a person. It’s therapeutic,” Mahadevan asserted.

“Just as sports merit marks are allotted to students by different boards of education, a similar policy should be adopted for students who excel in the field of music,” said the singer.

Gera’s ChildCentric Homes and the Shankar Mahadevan Academy have teamed up for the ‘Meet the Legend’ Series. Through the collaboration, Mahadevan intends to groom musically-inclined youngsters.

“We are glad to have The Shankar Mahadevan Academy as a partner for training the children of ChildCentric Homes in music and fostering their potential to become the future of the music industry,” he added.
