PANJIM: The Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) has warned of stringent legal action against all the health care facilities which failed to obtain authorisation under the Bio-Medical Waste Management (BMWM) Rules 2016 with regards to disposal of medical waste.
The GSPCB in a public notice issued on Tuesday has directed the health care facilities to dispose of their bio-medical waste at the Common Bio-medical Waste Treatment Facility (CBWTF) at Kundaim.
The Board has asked the health facilities, operating without authorisation, to submit application by March 31, to obtain necessary permission for operation, failing which stringent legal action would be initiated.
The Board has said that as per Rule 10 of the Bio-Medical Waste Management Rules, 2016, every occupier or operator handling bio-medical waste, irrespective of the quantity has to make an application in Form II to the GSPCB, for grant of Authorisation.
“In view of the above, all Health Care Facilities in the State of Goa operating without obtaining the Authorisation of the Board under the Bio-Medical Waste Management Rules, 2016 are hereby given notice to submit an application in Form Il through the online portal of the Board (https://goaocmms.nic.in/) by March 31 and also to dispose the bio-medical waste generated through the Common Bio-medical Waste Treatment Facility located at Kundaim IDC,” states the public notice.
The notice is issued after the State Advisory Committee directed the Board to act against the Health Care Facilities, who have failed to obtain authorisation under the Bio-medical Waste Management (BMW) Rules 2016.
During the meeting held last month, the committee had noticed that the Health Care Facilities of the Directorate of Health Services (DHS) and Goa Dental College and Hospital have started disposing their bio-medical waste through CBWTF Kundaim.
However, the GMC has still not commenced disposing the waste through the CBWTF and is disposing their waste by utilising the in-house incinerator
