Goa State Pollution Control Board officials on Wednesday descended at the Cuncolim Industrial estate to track down on the industrial units responsible for dumping slag outside the estate.
A GSPCB team was at the industrial estate throughout Wednesday and is believed to have inspected the seven units generating industrial waste. Till late Wednesday evening, the team was holed up at the estate collecting all relevant information about the production capacity of the units and the disposal of slag generated by them.
Preliminary information by the GSPCB team indicates that while one of the units had purchased a plot from the IDC for dumping slag, three others are believed to have to purchased private plots bordering the estate to dispose off the slag.
When contacted, GSPCB chairman Jose Manuel Noronha maintained that none of the three units obtained permission from the board for dumping slag outside the estate. “We are collecting information about the slag and its dumping outside the estate. Things will be clear in a day or two”, he added.
The GSPCB exercise comes against the backdrop of the news item carried by Herald this week, highlighting the rampant dumping of industrial slag in private properties bordering the estate.
