MARGAO: Chairman of Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) Jose Manuel Norohna descended at the polluting Cuncolim Industrial Estate on Friday for an first hand information on the prevailing  situation in the Estate.
Norohna had a series of separate meetings with owners of steel units and food processing plants, including fish meal plant and also inspected a couple of other units.
He had a meeting with the owners of steel units as the GSPCB is working on a plan for zero emission from the steel plants. A Bangalore-based party made a power point presentation for the benefit of the GSPCB chairman on a mechanism which stops emission of smoke from the steel units.
Norohna later told Herald that one of the steel units, Mahadurga has agreed to install the new mechanism devised by the Bangalore party. “The new mechanism will cost the unit around Rs 30-40 lakh and it will be installed by the end of February. After closely monitoring the functioning of the mechanism, all other steel units will implement the concept by July end,” Norohna said, adding that almost all the steel units were willing to invest in the new mechanism to keep the smoke billowing from the units at bay.
On the food processing and fish meal plants, Norohna pointed out that GSPCB officials have once again taken water samples from the effluent treatment plants. “Since the food processing units and fish meal plants are under the GSPCB radar, we have been continuously taking water samples for testing,” the GSPCB chairman said, while expressing happiness that things were slowly falling in place in the industrial estate.
