GU tightlipped on selection of registrar
HERALD REPORTER
PANJIM, JAN 11
Goa University is not too forthcoming on information pertaining to appointment of a new registrar, interviews for which were held in the beginning of December 2010.
Two candidates – Principal of Margao’s Kare College of Law Arun Nadkarni and Professor of GU’s Chemistry Department V P Kamat – were interviewed on December 6 by a selection committee headed by Vice Chancellor Dileep Deobagkar. The post had fallen vacant after M M Sangodkar’s five-year term as Registrar ended in August 2010.
One month after the interviews were conducted the decision of the Selection Committee was placed before the Executive Council on January 6. Reliable sources said a sealed envelope was placed before the EC which, most likely, had the short-listed candidate.
The sources further said the envelope was not opened and the exact reason for it is not known. There were six members of the EC present namely Bhaskar Nayak (Director of Higher Education), Officiating Registrar P V Desai and Vice Chancellor Deobagkar. The names of other three members present are not known.
When this reporter met the Officiating Registrar Desai and asked him whether a sealed envelope containing the name of the short-listed candidate was placed before the EC, he said, “Till the minuets of the January 6 meeting are confirmed I will not be able to say anything. The next meeting is in February at which a decision is likely to be taken.”
When it was brought to his notice that a vernacular daily had reported on the matter stating one candidate had been short-listed for the post, Desai said he was amused by that report, but at the same time mentioned he had not read it. Many things appear in newspapers, he added.
