MARGAO: The village panchayat of Guirdolim has expressed their discontent with the decision to close the existing level crossing in the village. In response, they have called for an extraordinary gram sabha to demand the reopening of the level crossing for the public as soon as possible.
The villagers and panchayat body firmly believe that the proposed railway underpass will not adequately resolve the traffic issue and will only create more inconvenience for the public. At Sunday’s gram sabha meeting chaired by Sarpanch Sonia Dias, no resolution was passed regarding the matter.
Since May 1, the railway level crossing in Guirdolim has been permanently closed to vehicular traffic, with workers already excavating the road and installing barriers. Sarpanch Sonia Dias emphasised the limitations of the proposed underpass, stating,
“The height of the underpass is not capable of accommodating even the ambulance and the fire brigade. It will result in major hardships at the time of emergencies. It will also be an inconvenience to school children and locals visiting the market.”
The issue will be thoroughly discussed, and a resolution will be passed at the upcoming extraordinary gram sabha. The gram sabha also addressed the matter of the proposed new panchayat ghar. With no available land for construction, it was decided to build the panchayat ghar on the site of the primary school. However, due to lack of funds, the panchayat is currently unable to proceed with the project.
