Guirim sarpanch granted bail in alleged rape case

MAPUSA: The Additional Sessions Court, Mapusa granted anticipatory bail to Guirim sarpanch Sanil Nanodkar in the alleged rape case. 

The Court ordered that in the event of Nanodkar’s arrest by the Mapusa police, then he be released on personal bond of Rs 50,000with two sureties of Rs 25,000 each. 

He has been asked to make himself available for interrogation by the IO as and when required by the investigating office and not to directly or indirectly make any inducement, threat or promise to any person acquainted with the facts of the case. 

He has been asked not to interfere with the victim and her family members and not to leave State without prior permission of this Court. 

In his anticipatory bail application, Nanodkar stated that being a politician he was being targeted by his rivals. 

Opposing the anticipatory bail application, the Mapusa police stated that 21-year-old victim from Guirim lodged her complaint stating that from May 1, 2022 to May 18, 2023, the accused took her at various places and had sexual intercourse with her without her wish and consent.

The police stated that the applicant was absconding and that family members were not cooperating with the investigation. The police said that the custody of the applicant is require and urged the Court to reject the anticipatory bail application.

After hearing both the parties, the Court upheld applicant’s Adv Vinayak Porob’s contention that the victim was aware before entering into relationship with the applicant that he was married and was having two children.

Also their relationship was consequential, he further after granting interim bail, the applicant had cooperated with the investigation, which is completed and that statement of witnesses and the victim have been recorded. Thus the Court opined that custodial interrogation of the applicant was not required.
