CANACONA: The Gujarat High Court has granted anticipatory bail to Ligorio D’Souza from Canacona, who was booked under the Prohibition Act for alleged smuggling of alcohol into dry Gujarat. The High Court, during the hearing on November 8, allowed the anticipatory bail application while stating that the police could seek Ligorio’s custody by approaching the appropriate authority.
As part of the bail conditions, Ligorio has been directed to appear before the magistrate for hearings related to the application seeking his custody.
The court further instructed Ligorio to cooperate with the investigations and be present before the investigating officer on December 7.
Additional conditions include surrendering his passport, refraining from leaving the country without court permission, and not changing his residence until the case is disposed of. Ligorio has also been prohibited from engaging in any illegal activities while on bail and specifically from supplying liquor in retail or wholesale to Gujarat.
The charges against Ligorio stem from an incident in June 2023 when two individuals were arrested for transporting liquor worth Rs 45.70 lakh in a truck. The arrested duo, residents of Satara, Maharashtra, implicated Ligorio, alleging that he had instructed them to deliver the consignment to Gujarat.
