Gusty winds raze Netravali farmer’s shed, leave cows, newborn calves sans shelter

SANGUEM: In a distressing incident, Bhiku Gaonkar, a farmer from Andapada ward in Netravali village, faced losses as the heavy rains accompanied by gusty winds on October 9 wreaked havoc, resulting in the destruction of his cattle shed.

The unfortunate event occurred when a wild tree, along with a cashew tree, collapsed onto Gaonkar’s cattle shed, where seven hybrid Jersey cows and their newly born calves were housed.

Gaonkar estimated the loss to be around R. 1.5 lakh, revealing that approximately 70 asbestos sheets and cement poles supporting the shed were completely destroyed.

Fortunately, the farmers had released the cattle due to the heavy rains, preventing potential casualties among the animals.

In the aftermath, ward member Rakhi Naik visited Gaonkar’s residence and urged the Talathi to assess the damage and submit a report. Naik stated, “I shall try to get Bhiku compensated under the Natural Calamity Funds,” asserting the need to support self-employed individuals during times of crisis.

With no alternative shelter for his cattle, Gaonkar is compelled to tie them in the open, raising concerns about the impact on milk production and the well-being of the young calves.

Facing the daunting task of rebuilding the shed, Gaonkar appealed for immediate assistance from the government to ensure the safety and welfare of his prized cattle.
