Speculation surrounding Hardik Pandya’s future with the Mumbai Indians (MI) has gathered momentum ahead of IPL 2027, with reports suggesting the franchise could consider trading their captain. While several teams have reportedly shown interest, former India opener Aakash Chopra believes a return to the Gujarat Titans (GT) is unlikely.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Chopra said that although rumours indicate multiple franchises are monitoring the situation, Gujarat may not be keen on bringing Pandya back. He also claimed that Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) are among the teams unlikely to pursue the all-rounder if a trade window opens.
Chopra questioned what Gujarat could realistically offer Mumbai in exchange for a player of Pandya’s stature. He pointed out that the Titans have built one of the most balanced squads in recent IPL seasons, making it difficult for them to part with key players.
According to Chopra, Gujarat’s batting unit is already well settled with captain Shubman Gill, Sai Sudharsan and Jos Buttler forming a formidable top order. Their bowling attack also boasts proven match-winners such as Rashid Khan, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna and Kagiso Rabada.
He suggested Mumbai could ask for a player like Rashid Khan or Rabada in a potential deal but admitted such a swap appears unrealistic. Chopra questioned why Gujarat would weaken a successful squad by releasing one of its biggest stars.
The former cricketer also highlighted the leadership aspect, noting that Gill has firmly established himself as GT captain. Bringing Pandya back could create an unnecessary leadership dilemma, with two high-profile captains in the same dressing room.
While trade rumours continue to circulate, Chopra believes a move back to Gujarat is improbable, with both cricketing balance and team dynamics working against such a transfer
